The importance of self-belief

Yesterday, I spotted this quote on my daughter’s desk: “You are the girl that you know yourself to be.”
What does it actually mean? To me, it means that whatever you believe about yourself to be true, becomes true to you (whether it’s true or not).
As professional women, it doesn’t matter how motivated, successful, or dedicated we are; we often sabotage ourselves with our negative thoughts like these:
I’m not a good manager.
Everyone else seems to have their career path figured out except me.
If I ask for flexibility, they’ll think I’m not committed to my job.
I suck at balancing work and my life.
I should be able to handle this without asking for help.
I’m constantly dropping the ball somewhere.
I don’t have time for friendships or hobbies anymore.
Other mums have it all together, why can’t I?
I should enjoy every moment of motherhood, but sometimes I just want a break.
I’m not a good mum.
Your beliefs about yourself - whether positive or negative - strongly influence your thoughts, actions, and ultimately your experiences. Your self-perception and mindset shape your reality.
A common limiting thought for many professional women balancing career and motherhood is: "I’m failing at both - I'm not fully present at work, and I’m not fully present at home."
This belief creates guilt, stress, and self-doubt, making women feel like they are constantly falling short in both areas.
Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for balance that shifts daily. Some days work will need more of you, other days your family will. And that’s okay.
Instead of “I’m failing at both,” shift to “I am doing my best in both roles, and that is enough.”
Instead of focusing on what’s lacking, acknowledge what you are doing well. Did you finish a work task while also making time for a meaningful moment with your child? That’s a win.
This week, celebrate one small win each day - whether it’s a work achievement or a meaningful moment with your kids.
